In contrast to countries like China, where B2B platforms such as Alibaba facilitate easy access to numerous vendors, or the United States, where sites like FashionGo have gained recognition among boutique owners, sourcing from Turkey presents a more intricate challenge. It is perplexing that, as of 2024, one of the world’s foremost textile hubs, valued at $12.9 billion, still lacks a user-friendly B2B platform that effectively connects retailers worldwide with Turkish wholesalers. Imagine the convenience that would ensue if there were no need to travel to Istanbul or engage a fashion buyer to explore each wholesale district. The B2B sites I have seen so far are simply taking images from the vendor’s telegrams reposting them on their platforms and reselling them for a markup price, which defeats the purpose of buying directly from the supplier. While it is true that numerous tradeshows and exhibitions occur monthly in Turkey, they often lack sufficient promotion. It is important to note that many individuals are unaware of Turkey’s wholesale market, let alone its existence, which inspired me to establish Nobarriersgrowth.
The Good News is.. We are finally solving this problem with our very own B2B platform launching early next year, be sure to sign-up for updates!
So how do you source products from Istanbul without needing to waste money hiring a fashion buyer or middleman?
You are going to need the following:
- Android phone or I phone
- Telegram and WhatsApp
- Instagram Account
- Cargo company
- Patience (lots of it)
Establishing connections with wholesalers does not have to be a complicated process. The primary requirement is to download the Telegram application. If you already utilise WhatsApp, you can easily reach out to the wholesalers via a message, and they will provide you with a direct link to access their Telegram channel. While this may initially seem perplexing, it is important to understand that vendors in Turkiye do not have online websites you can buy directly from. It is understood that you may be contemplating the fact that it is now 2024, yet Turkey appears to be lagging behind in technological advancements. While it would require several blog posts to elaborate on the various reasons why these suppliers lack online portals, let us redirect our attention to the matter at hand.
Telegram
Most vendors are also cautious about disclosing their new products to unfamiliar individuals. WhatsApp serves as the initial means of communication, allowing you to introduce yourself to the vendor. It is worth noting that many wholesalers also utilise WhatsApp to share their latest designs; however, be prepared for a significant influx of messages on a daily basis.
I understand that you may be questioning the necessity of using WhatsApp as an initial step to connect with the wholesalers on Telegram. It is important to recall that I previously emphasized the value of patience. This situation exemplifies that principle. If you have not traveled to Istanbul to meet the wholesalers in person and obtain their Telegram link, it is likely that you will need to reach out to them via WhatsApp to acquire the link. Alternatively, you have the option to purchase our vendor list, which contains comprehensive information about the wholesalers, including their WhatsApp contact numbers, Instagram handles, and all the details required to commence your sourcing journey.
A significant majority, exceeding 90%, of wholesalers in Turkey lack websites, which has led to Instagram becoming the primary platform for vendors to display their latest designs. The showcased products typically include e-commerce photographs featuring models adorned in the new season’s collections. However, to place an order, it remains necessary to contact the vendors via WhatsApp. Additionally, Telegram serves as a platform where one can access information regarding prices and sizes of the items. Vendors do not upload every product to Instagram due to the overwhelming number of items available. Thus, Instagram and Telegram are utilized for product viewing, while WhatsApp is designated for order placement.
Patience… No Response From Vendors
Your going to reach out to some vendors who will give you the silent treatment or take several hours or even days to respond. This behavior is quite typical, as the majority of Turkish wholesalers are extremely busy. It is advisable to utilize Telegram instead, as it can streamline communication and reduce the time spent on translating and exchanging inquiries about prices and products. Keep in mind that many of these vendors are managing numerous clients, and your request for a prompt reply does not guarantee immediate attention. Exercise patience; send your message and await a response. There is a possibility that they may not be proficient in English and have passed your inquiry to another team member who can assist with translation and further communication.
Shipping and Logistics
Many wholesalers will ask for your cargo details in order to facilitate the shipment of your goods. While a minority of wholesalers might suggest certain cargo options, it is important to recognize that they typically lack expertise in shipping matters. I have observed instances where wholesalers have selected inappropriate cargo, leading to significant complications. Fortunately, I have taken the initiative to provide you with a complimentary option known as Fesmina Cargo. Located in Laleli, they offer global shipping services and freight-forwarding. It is important to consider that there are alternative shipping companies that offer significantly lower rates and a variety of options, so do shop around first.
The process of getting your stock from the wholesalers to your chosen cargo
You will initiate your order with the wholesaler, complete the payment for your goods, and provide them with the necessary information regarding your cargo, enabling them to organise a collection for your inventory. Certain cargo companies employ their own couriers who will collect the goods directly from the wholesalers at no additional cost and deliver them straight to the cargo depot. Conversely, some companies may require the wholesalers to drop off the items instead. While a few wholesalers might impose a nominal fee for this service, it typically does not exceed 100 turkish lira, equivalent to approximately $4. Upon the arrival of the goods at the cargo facility, they will reach out to you to coordinate the shipment and provide all relevant details, including package volume and pricing. It is essential to contact the cargo company in advance to inform them of the wholesalers from whom you intend to purchase. The most unfavorable situation would be to have your stock sent to a cargo company that is unaware of your identity.
